Some of the world’s largest economic hubs are faced with the inevitable reality of higher seas.
Research and analysis are needed to develop effective adaptations to preserve governance systems, infrastructure, business, supply chains, ecosystem dependencies, and personal assets.
In addition, synthesis and communication of existing knowledge and expertise is crucial to providing accurate risk assessments and timelines. We must train a new generation of experts to develop sustainable solutions to climate change impacts.
Although sea level rise represents an unprecedented threat, it also presents an opportunity for communities to make timely socioeconomic improvements that gain value over the long term.
Florida International University’s Sea Level Solutions Center is a hub for international research, collaboration, education, communication, and outreach, and a network of experts associated with this hub.
The Center provides a clear and reliable voice focused on successful adaptation in a local context that can be heard and understood by multiple public audiences as stressful conditions become more severe.
FIU has long been engaged in sea level related research across diverse disciplines, including but not limited to: natural and social sciences, architecture, engineering, computer sciences, law, communications, business, human health, hospitality and tourism management.
History of Success
FIU has a demonstrated history of success working with both government and the private sector, and has shown a willingness to better address climate change and sea level solutions with our own facilities development, asset management, daily operations, and curriculum revisions.
Located in one of the world’s highest-risk regions, the Sea Level Solutions Center at FIU is poised to make a significant contribution to the future well-being of a prosperous communities both locally and around the world.
At Florida International University (FIU) we believe that a trans-disciplinary team can more effectively design innovative and unexpected responses to sea level rise challenges in urban areas across an unprecedented range of scales. These solutions can be found in new strategies and tactics which are identified through the specialized art of implementing creative approaches in practical and deliberate ways. This is critical in order to sustain the resources upon which humans depend, and to establish high quality and artful public spaces that uplift, enlighten, educate, inform, and sustain the environment and society.
Given the need for an organizational mechanism to develop useful and sustained sea level responses, FIU has created the Sea Level Solutions Center. The Center will coordinate and engage in local to global solutions-oriented research, education, strategic thinking, communications and outreach by organizing top scientists, educators, students, municipal leaders, and policy makers to produce an accurate understanding of sea level rise and its impacts. It will train the next generation to have the knowledge and skills to thrive.
